Nical language six perennial uestions about evolution• Am I a Monkey• Why Is Evolution a Theory• What Is DNA• Do All Scientists Accept Evolution• How Did Life Begin• Can One Believe in Evolution and GodThis to the point book answers each of these uestions with force Ayala's occasionally biting essays refuse t. I enjoyed the first five chapters of this book but not so much the final chapter which was not only confusing and random but didn t even concern the same subject matter as the rest of the book Of course the author can write whatever he pleases but I think that it felt out of place Perhaps if Ayala believes that science and religion exist in different disciplines maybe they should stay in separate booksFull review

Francisco J. Ayala Å 9 Read Read ✓ E-book, or Kindle E-pub Å Francisco J. Ayala Characters Am I a Monkey? Despite the ongoing cultural controversy in America evolution remains a cornerstone of science In this book Francisco J Ayala an evolutionary biologist member of the National Academy of Sciences and winner of the National Medal of Science and the Templeton Prize cuts to the chase in a daring attempt to address in nontech. This slim book is an attempt to explain the basics of the idea of evolution including its compatibility with religious belief particularly fundamental beliefs around The Bible held by a number of Americans in particularThere are 6 chapters the first of which starts off by the author saying I am a primate and going on from there The explanations are clearly expressed although I would have liked explanation of the various components of DNA etc There are a few helpful diagrams at the end of chapter 3 that deal with things like evolution of plants fossils and the distribution of homo sapiens across the worldThere wasn t anything that I was unfamiliar with I read it because I was curious to see how Ayala a well known scientist explained the issues which he does fairly well clearly and entertainingly I think he might have spent a few paragraphs outlining the reason for the ages of the earth and so on because it seems to me that this is an issue for a number of the people for whom the book is intended As an example I was recently at a public lecture at the University of Melbourne where the attendees are predominantly graduates from young to elderly that explained the different cultural and historical approaches to Australia s indigenous peoples who in my lifetime were considered to be relatively recent arrivals rather than the around 60000 years Ayala provides and the recent suggestions from research of 80000 years ago or These numbers are public knowledge or at least you could be informed of them through normal mediaNotwithstanding that an older woman identifying herself as having an Education background and being a Christian uietly asked after the talk whether there was any scientific basis for the statements made by the speaker regarding the tenure of Aboriginal people Given the talk had comprised evidence from a number of sources covering a number of sources and among those in Ayala s text this was than surprising There was a little tittering and other sounds from the 100 and people there The speaker s appropriate response was to refer to what he d presented avoiding any discussion of any Biblical timeline which was probably an excellent thing to do He clearly didn t expect such a uestion and nor did ISo I wonder whether Ayala s message which was that science and religion were complementary would have been received and considered by his target audience It s an easy read on the train or in an easy chair for an hour or so perhaps
