READ & DOWNLOAD Lightnin Hopkins READ & DOWNLOAD â GRUPOSIAM.CO µ Alan Govenar Alan Govenar µ 1 REVIEW By the time of his death in 1982 Sam “Lightnin’” Hopkins was likely the most recorded blues artist in history This brilliant new biography—the first book ever written about him—illuminates the many contradictions of the man and his myth Born in 1912 to a poor sharecropping family in the cotton country between Dallas and Houston Hopkins left home when he was only eight years old with a guitar his brother had given him He made his living however he could sticking to the open road play. 35 stars couldn t drop to 3 in good conscience so 5 for subject matter and 3 for execution splits difference for a 4 Sam Lightnin Hopkins was a giant of 20th century American music He s also my favorite bluesman of all time so I approached Alan Govenar s 2010 biography of Po Lightnin with great joy and great expectations Reading about him is such a pleasure it would be hard for the book to be disappointing yet my familiarity with Hopkins set the standards high Govenar s biography is a success though at 236 pages of main text it s too short for a 36 year career a 69 year give or take I m not sure anybody knows for sure life Lightnin s hazy early days are given skimpy attention though that s not unexpected Still since the years 1946 to 1954 are considered his most fruitful musical period it s disappointing to have these glory days over by page 70 or so Govenar s primary sources through the 1960s are the expected ones record company owners producers manager types and those instrumental in the folkblues revival such as Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz who might have been the only white man Lightnin completely trusted blues and jazz researcher Mack McCormick who promoted and recorded Lightnin and when he eventually grew exasperated with him wrote perhaps the most hostile liner notes ever to appear on an album blues historian Samuel Charters whose Hopkins album recorded on a hand held device in Lightnin s Houston apartment in 1959 ended a five year recording dormancy for Hopkins and started his ascension in folk blues circles But to those who ve perused the often voluminous liner notes to Lightnin s albums and CD reissues and those who saw Les Blank s film The Blues According to Lightnin Hopkins much of this will be familiar Still Govenar handles his subject well and does expand upon known sources Unfortunately we can t completely get inside Lightnin s most significant and personal relationship with a woman Antoinette Charles the woman whom Lightnin referred to as his wife she wasn t Lightnin used terms like wife and cousin loosely declined to participate in the book It s a shame But Govenar does his best sorting facts from fiction including Lightnin s own myths andor truths about his prison time and the source of his nickname and his day to day life in Houston s Third Ward But as Lightnin becomes one of the leading lights of the folk blues revival from 1959 into the 1960s and his touring and recordings multiply and he becomes a true star Govenar s book with a few sources now at his disposal perks up The biography really shines in the later years An unexpected pleasure is the chapter Mojo Hand An Orphic Tale Here we go from friends colleagues and record business types to a truly intimate source JJ Phillips wrote a novel based loosely on her relationship with Lightnin Govenar had extensive correspondence with Phillips who was in the mid 60s Lightnin s lover and close friend despite the musician s ongoing relationship with Antoinette herself with a cuckolded husband Phillips attempts at keeping her liaisons with Lightnin from Antoinette and her insights into this complicated man are fascinating This chapter humanizes the complicated Lightnin a wary scoundrel sometimes unknowable lovable impetuous selfish brash witty loving boisterous difficult uneducated country wise guarded charming occasionally cruel a drinker an incorrigible gambler a brilliant musician Phillips tells us an amusing story about a time when Lightnin in Los Angeles was in Schwab s drug store looking for a laxative Who does he run into but fellow blues legend John Lee Hooker also seeking a laxative as they complain about LA food Elsewhere the book is filled out by recording information song lyrics though Lightnin s lyrics often made up on the spot sound better on recordings than they read Lightnin s insistence on being paid in cash up front when recording often song by song and his complete disregard for recording contracts a habit that made him perhaps the most recorded bluesman in history if Hooker wasn t Govenar really hits his stride in the last decade of Hopkins life helped by extensive interviews with David Benson a young black man who drove Hopkins to gigs functioned as a de facto manager and generally took care of his needs in his later years Benson discussing Lightnin s paralyzing fear of flying during a 1978 tour in Japan relates a tale in which the bluesman was adamant about not going to the country because he heard it had been decimated by an atomic bomb Benson s assertions that it had happened 30 years ago didn t calm Lightnin s fears Hopkins also asked Benson whether they might fly off the end of the world What The earth is round Another tale from Japan featuring Lightnin and blind harmonica player Sonny Terry and his pancakes ends with a hilariously profane exclamation from Terry that alone is worth the price of the book but I won t spoil it Govenar touches upon the folk blues route Lightnin largely took from 1959 onward meaning an emphasis on acoustic guitar over electric Lightnin preferred and was generally potent on electric his country background but city living and includes a few critiues of his many many albums I hoped though for just well As I said the book is too short More analysis from blues giantsscholars about Lightnin s career would have been welcome maybe a section after the discography on his essential albums perhaps extensive sources Interestingly Govenar worked on and off on this thing for than 10 years yet it at times seems as if it was put together in a hurry There are a few typos and the end notes reveal that some of these interviews took place less than a year before the book was publishedThere are some photos I haven t seen before which was nice and the discography 50 pages is welcome All in all I enjoyed Lightnin Hopkins His Life and Blues a great deal Lightnin was notoriously a tough man for other musicians to back his chord changes sometimes coming out of nowhere Lightnin change when Lightnin change he said His singing and playing his tunes they never changed much and that s not really a bad thing Stinker's Return
