Michael Pye Ò 0 FREE READ [Free E–pub] The Drowning Room BY Michael Pye The author certainly has the ability to tell a story but I didn't get the impression that he in any way conveyed the earthy reality of life in the 17th century I found the characters flat and the settings devoid of anything that suggests the story took place in New Amsterdam New York Cedar Rapids Dallas or Toky

FREE READ The Drowning Room REVIEW ð PDF, DOC, TXT or eBook Ò Michael Pye Michael Pye Ò 0 FREE READ Set during the terrible winter of 1642 in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam this haunting and evocative novel based. Well written but the protagonist didn t strike me as particularly authentic That s a problem as the book is an overgrown character sketch based on the true life of one Dutch settler in New Amsterdam Gretje Reyniers The real Gretje a prostitute money lender and woman about town left behind a significant criminal record dotted with escapades like mooning sailors and measuring genitalia and declaring herself the people s whore I felt like the author s interpretation of all the space between those episodes you know her actual life just didn t fit Sure people are nuanced than their rap sheets would indicate but the fictional Gretje depicted mostly through lots of cold and melancholy philosophical musings doesn t seem capable or worthy of such colorful crimes Sometimes let s just call a bawd a bawd I think the real Gretje would agree

FREE READ The Drowning Room REVIEW ð PDF, DOC, TXT or eBook Ò Michael Pye Michael Pye Ò 0 FREE READ On fact tells of Gretje Reyniers a feisty complex woman who makes her own unconventional way Pye captures in earthy. I stumbled on references to this book as I was researching my genealogy Gretja and Anthony de Salle yes he actually had a last name are my 10th great grandparents I knew their story before reading this book and fortunately already knew it was a highly fictionalized account This could have been a fantastically intriguing story but the author certainly suandered the opportunity Pye used legal records of early New Amsterdam as the bones of a poorly executed story He jumps through time in a clumsy way which is difficult to follow He doesn t give the reader any opportunity to feel Gretje It s stilted haphazard and contains highly unbelievable scenes I was so disappointedWhat Pye should have done is tell the story in real time and not as a retrospective He should have started the story with Anthony s background which is incredibly fascinating the son of one of the most notorious Barbary Pirates of the early 17th century and an unknown Moor He came of age living in Morocco then sent with a brother to his father s native Holland due to Moroccan drought There he met Gretje Pye should have built these characters believably and put us into their escapades as they unfolded He could have made other real characters ie the minister and his wife integral to the story as they were in reality He should have brought us into the causes of the legal cases brought before the court with the back and forth of both parties before during and after He could have delved a little into the workings of highly litigious society where slander was a way of life Some historians contend that the suitscharges against Gretje and Anthony were a result of a religious society that did not accept their lack of piety Anthony was Muslim What a story that could have been But nope instead we have a weak development of one character in a poorly executed story In Rumplestiltskin straw was spun into gold Pye has managed to turn gold into straw

The author has an interesting voice and some of the scenes like the drowning room are uite striking Mostly the book is sensory rather than descriptive in that the author creates an emotional state for the reader rather than conveys information For example I understood the interior world of the main character but I had a hard time picturing her surroundings It s also challenging because the story is not linear or very satisfying in the end I imagine The Drowning Room would be better in one sitting rather than over a few months like I read it Overall I was disappointed because I hoped to learn about life in New Amsterdam but I imagine this would be a refreshing read for the right reader
