characters The Mirror of Beauty ´ eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB Eserts of Rajputana the verdant valley of Kashmir and the glorious cosmopolis of Delhi the craft of miniature painting and the art of carpet designing scintillating musical performances and recurring paintings of mysterious alluring women Its scope breathtaking its language beguiling and its style sumptuous this is a work of profound beauty depth and powe. Mirror of Beauty is about Wazir Khanam a strikingly beautiful young woman and her journey through life men and her struggle to survive on her own terms If you like historical books there are elements of this book you will absolutely love The story in itself is a great tale of a woman choosing her own path and living life on her own terms in a time when this was unknown of Set during the decline of the Mughal rule and right before the revolt of 1857 Wazir chooses her own path She partners with the men she loves not those chosen by her family or deemed marriage able she has relationships and bears children despite no promises of marriage and she keeps her dignity despite how people judge her Apart from this the author s detailed descriptions of the era the clothes the architecture the food and customs are stunning and help transport you back to the time And lastly interspersed with this a liberal dose of poetry from some of the greats like Ghalib Naushad and Mir Tai Mir But some of the best parts are also in my view some of the books failings While the detailed descriptions help create atmosphere at times these are distracting and take you away from the main story When one of the heroes is planning to assassinate a British officer we suddenly have a detailed description of 4 pages of the architecture of the city And within the same story line a few pages later we diverge off for another 8 pages on the history of different types of riflesSome of the descriptions while keeping to the tone of high praise of that era also seem fairly ridiculous Some examples each hair of his beard and moustaches trimmed just so like the bezel of a gemstone and the delicate smooth length of her wrists and forearms radiant like purple flamesAnd lastly the poetry I suppose there are some of you who love poetry so much these are your favorite parts But I found it overdone There was just too much poetry interrupting every conversation When Wazir and her lover are about to have sex they are instead engaged in a poetry debate when a maid is helping her change her clothes they are uoting poetry I understand this may have been the manner of conversation in the time but honestly you do get a tired of a book where folks aren t able to say a simple thing like I want to go to the bathroom without uoting a couple of lines of poetry Bright and Early Thursday Evening A Tangled Tale its language beguiling and My valiant knight its style sumptuous this The White Lantern is a work of profound beauty depth and powe. characters The Mirror of Beauty ´ eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB It is the sunset of the Mughal Empire The splendour of imperial Delhi flares one last time The young daughter of a craftsman in the city elopes with an officer of the East India Company And so we are drawn into the story of Wazir Khanam a dazzlingly beautiful and fiercely independent woman who takes a series of lovers including a Navab and a Mughal prince. Reuires tremendous amount of patience and dedication to finish it I almost left it in between but just had a hunch to not do so and my hunch proved right because long after Wazir leaves from the pages of your book it being the last page your heart still lingers around the pains of her cursed love life this beautiful woman had to go through despite being blessed with impeccable looks That along with the detailed description of the colonial and Mughal lifestyle starting from the food sold in the street bazaars in Delhi to the tunics worn by every character and there s an innumerable lot and the famous verses of the elite poets of the time Ghalib Dagh etc this book can well be claimed to be the Indian version of War Peace Worth a read anytime
