Download ¾ The Strange Adventures of Mr Andrew Hawthorn and Other Stories 108 A new selection of short stories by the prince of thriller writers The Times London The short stories of John Buchan are known for their authentically rendered backgrounds taut pacing and atmosphere of expectancy and international intrigue These diverse tales combine Buchan's remarkable experiences and interests as a traveler war correspondent politician and classical scholar Edited by acclaimed author Giles F. This took me the best part of a year to finish I enjoyed each story as a separate unit but they never instilled in me a desire to proceed immediately to the next one in the book so there were usually long gaps between each one Buchan s prose is muscular and old fashioned and his imperialistic attitudes are freuently laughable by modern standards but his heart is in the right place He values the old virtues of courage honour truthfulness and decency and he s good at portraying inner emotional conflict as the basis of morality a conflict often mirrored by the situations the characters find themselves in The stand out stories for me were Basilissa Ship to Tarshish Sing a Song of Sixpence and the wonderful The Wind in the Portico this last story in particular is a superb example of an heroic supernatural tale Another story called Fountainblue also had a strong effect on me despite its somewhat disjointed nature primarily because of the atmosphere created by the description of the storm at sea
