SUMMARY õ Sahm e man T and a threat to the Shah’s oppressive regime When the secret service arrive to arrest him it is the start of a terrifying period for Massoumeh Her fate so long dictated by family loyalty and tradition is now tied to the changing fortunes of her countrySpanning five turbulent decades of Iranian history from before the 1979 revolution through the Islamic Republic and up to the present The Book of Fate is a truly remarkable story and a rare insider’s view of Iranian societ. What can i say about this novel It was an easy read I felt I could identify with it in every way as the society I live in is not so different from other eastern societies in terms of culture and norms I have read before and had some idea about the revolution in Iran but this novel gave me insight into what happened to the simple individuals and people in the country and shed some light on to how different societies suffer from the same political and social hypocrisies I could really identify with the main character s struggles Massiumeh and suffering to just lead a normal and simple life It hurt me how she was always sold out as she says from one person to the other First by her brothers who saw that she wasn t a humanbeing just like them then her husband who in the name of freedom oppressed her in different ways then her children in the end who treated her like she was exclusively their own property and some kind of statue that has no heart or needs or feelings This is how women are always oppressed not in the name of religion necessarily but sometimes in the name of some university book ideologies that call for the rights of women but in reality oppress them in different ways It really shocked me how she described Iran after the revolution and it brought back so many memories of my own How all these people who were once together have committed atrocities to eachother and how in the name of religion everything was distorted and real freedom has become of a mirage of beautiful slogans that had nothing to do with reality It shocked me that we are living the same catastrophe as though we humanbeings never learn from the past and are always committing the same mistakes other nations and generations have committed like we never ever learn Or perhaps we are too hopeful and think we will be somehow different from othersI like Massoumeh because i could understand her religious affiliations and her feeling of resentment towards using religion for personal gain and how her husband Hamid who supposedly believed in Communism and freedom was just as bad by letting his family down one time after the other and being so indifferent and irresponsible towards them I noticed also how she has shown the double standards we suffer from in our socities where her son was to lead a very westernized approach when it came to his life but when it came to his mother s he suddenly acted differently eventhough she was not going to commit a crime or do anything wrong according to religion but just because of some stupid traditions and in the name of honour for a dead man who has brought nothing but misery to her life as well Also how women oppress eachother sometimes by giving in to some chauvinistic nonesense that they become worse than some men themselves I expected her daughter Shirin out of all to feel for her and understand her needs but she was the worst amongst her children in denying her mother from her basic right after all the sacrifices she has made for her them over the years I guess i didn t like the ending eventhough it was very realistic because it made me feel that in the end Massoumeh gave in and didn t resist to obtain what s lawfully hers It seems all her life she had to be grateful for the little she got eventhough it was her basic right It broke my heart that she didn t fight till the very end and she was expected as usual to sacrifice her own happiness for others as if it was her dutyOne of the things I really liked is how balanced she was in everything She portrayed an honest and beautiful image of her society and this balanced image is never welcome anywhere in the world i guess Finally the only thing i didn t like was the ending and some parts which were a bit dramatic but i guess it is normal in some novels

SUMMARY õ Sahm e man Iscover his letters they accuse her of bringing them dishonour She is badly beaten by her brother and her parents hastily arrange for her to marry to a man she’s never met Facing a life without love and the prospect of no education Massoumeh is distraught but a female neighbour urges her to comply “We each have a destiny and you can’t fight yours”The years that follow Massoumeh’s wedding prove transformative for Iran Hamid Massoumeh’s husband is a political dissiden. It wasn t the first book I read about the hardships of that era of Iran s bloody history weather it was a memoir or a fiction the other books narrated how the lives of their characters were affected and shaped by the years of war fear executions and separation they expressed a certain political opinion towards the Shah s fallen regime or the Islamists condemning or praisingBut this book was all about Massoumeh herself than her life shaped by Iran s political transformations I didn t like almost all of the characters in the book except for Parvaneh I hated Massoumeh s fanatic brothers her whining nagging character I didn t like that typical storyline where she united with her lost love after like forty years she widowed and he separated like a low production movie and to make it typical and annoying she just give her youth dream up the one she tried to kill herself over for no logical reasons real life just doesn t work like that real life doesn t offer such chances I can t see why this book was banned in Iran a book like children of the jacaranda tree can have such banning or things I have been silent about but not this book that was of a life story than a nation story I didn t find it good because I started reading it with different expectations than it has offered to me I had hard time finishing it unlike children of the jacaranda tree which was hard to read because of the emotional burden it imposed this one was sometimes too boring
