review The Great Serum Race Blazing the Iditarod Trail ä PDF, eBook or Kindle ePUB free S in Anchorage hundreds of miles of snowbound wilderness away The only way to get it to Nome was by dogsled Twenty teams braved subzero temperatures and blizzard conditions to run over 600 miles in six days in a desperate relay race that saved the people of Nome Several of the dogs including Togo and Balto b. I have used this book with a year three class who are studying the Arctic It tells the story of the great serum race that saved the people of Nome in 1925 It tells the true story of the diphtheria outbreak in Nome and how the community of Alaska together with 20 mushers and Husky dogs come together to save the people of Nome They battle the treacherous conditions through 674 miles from Nenana to Nome The serum is desperately needed by Dr Welch so he can help the people of Nome however the nearest supply of serum is in Anchorage which is 1000 miles away The only way of transport was for the serum to be transported part way by train and the rest of the way by sled dog team They all had to be careful with the serum as if it froze it would be useless Despite all the obstacles faced by the teams they managed a successful relay and the serum arrived safely in Nome ahead of schedule The people of Nome were saved and the sled dogs and mushers were heroes The beautiful illustrations really bring the story to life and allow children to really imagine what life is like in conditions so different to what we live in The children love this book and really enjoy hearing about the hero dog Balto After reading this book children were so enthusiastic to write character descriptions and produced amazing work This book is a useful starting point for getting children to think about freeze frames and role play A beautiful insight into the Inuit people and their way of life Scream If You Want to Go Faster year three class who are studying the Arctic It tells the story of the great serum race that saved the people of Nome in 1925 It tells the true story of the diphtheria outbreak in Nome and how the community of Alaska together with 20 mushers and Husky dogs come together to save the people of Nome They battle the treacherous conditions through 674 miles from Nenana to Nome The serum is desperately needed by Dr Welch so he can help the people of Nome however the nearest supply of serum is in Anchorage which is 1000 miles away The only way of transport was for the serum to be transported part way by train and the rest of the way by sled dog team They all had to be careful with the serum as if it froze it would be useless Despite all the obstacles faced by the teams they managed a successful relay and the serum arrived safely in Nome ahead of schedule The people of Nome were saved and the sled dogs and mushers were heroes The beautiful illustrations really bring the story to life and allow children to really imagine what life is like in conditions so different to what we live in The children love this book and really enjoy hearing about the hero dog Balto After reading this book children were so enthusiastic to write character descriptions and produced amazing work This book is a useful starting point for getting children to think about freeze frames and role play A beautiful insight into the Inuit people and their way of life

review The Great Serum Race Blazing the Iditarod Trail ä PDF, eBook or Kindle ePUB free Ecame national heroes Today their efforts and those of the courageous mushers are commemorated every March by the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Jon Van Zyle’s stunning oil paintings capture the brutal conditions pristine wilderness and sheer guts and determination demonstrated by the heroic mushers and dogs. This was a good introduction to this history It provided a nice overview of all the problems encountered by Dr Welch and the mushers dedication to helping save lives The dogs were stars and the problems with the machinery were highlightedMy main problem with the book was that it had false information It said that Leonhard Seppala s dog Balto was the main hero Togo does get a little glory Seppala did own both dogs but Balto was never a racer just a freighting dog Gunnar Kaasen who had Balto as one of his lead dogs without the consent or knowledge of Seppala was the one who gave Balto to the tour operator The tour operator put the dogs in deplorable conditions Since Kaasen had the last leg he wasn t supposed to and his treatment of his hero team I don t think he should be written as glorious as he was He only sledded about 24 miles Seppala on the other hand did over 200 miles and rewarded his dogs especially Togo for all the work they did

A wonderful account of the race to Nome Alaska in the 1920 s to deliver diphtheria serum to the residents of the town There are currently many stories about Balto because his team was last in the relay and delivered the much needed serum However this book pays tribute to the other teams twenty in all and the 160 dogs who covered 674 miles altogether One of the teams led by the legendary musher Leonhard Seppala and his strongest dog Togo ran miles than any of the other teams a total of 261 miles by themselves Four dogs died during the relay and several others were permanently lamed because of the lethal weather conditions This wonderful book beautifully illustrated by Jon Van Zyle gives the reader a complete telling of this unparalleled event and the effort involved to accomplish it
